Genetic research at UC Davis uncovered the origins of the grape Petite Sirah. Petite Sirah (aka Durif) is the outcome of an experiment conducted by a French nurseryman, Dr. Francois Durif, in the 1860s. In an attempt to create a varietal resistant to mildew, Durif crossed Syrah and Peloursin (a grape no longer in commerce) and named this new variety after himself.
However, his inability to produce a quality wine nullified the value of this mildew-resistant variety in France. Petite Sirah does well in very warm climates and is grown in abundance in South America, parts of California (like East Paso Robles) and Australia. Australians refer to Syrah as Shiraz and their wines are typically more lush, ripe and fruit-forward than Old World Syrahs.

It’s that time of year again! This is my personal favorite season, one where I get plenty of opportunities to make tablescapes that accompany delicious food, wine and wonderful conversations. No matter the size of your party, you can still make a beautiful table with small simple touches. I am a huge believer in using things you already have in your cupboards, garden or storage. A few simple touches and you can have a festive table—on a budget.

I’m the Mom of a VERY high energy boy. Our son keeps us (happily) on our toes all the time. I’m also a Mom who likes wine and who occasionally (usually while on vacation) enjoys visiting new tasting rooms and trying new wines with my husband and son.

One of my favorite things to do is travel. The best trips have always been the ones in which most everything goes smoothly. Although we are obviously not in control of all factors on a vacation, I have a few suggestions to help make that vacation be the most stress-free possible.
